Week 20 signal decoded: Dracula

This week’s transmission has been deciphered and it looks as though the aliens have been observing our tradition of Halloween. This song has only one word, “Dracula”, followed by a menacing laugh. Let’s hope they can discern the difference in behaviors between our regular society and that of fictional vampires…

Week 19 signal decoded: Look At My Blue Eyes

This week’s signal seems to be about the worldwide phenomenon known as Facebook. More specifically, it’s about a certain type of user on Facebook. We at the Institute don’t know anyone similar to the person described in this song. But perhaps you do.

Look where I am now, ain’t it so cool?
Eating cheese steak and brownies with a pop or two.
Just got a haircut, now I look so fine.
Got to keep you up to date all of the time.
Now please excuse me as I take 300 shots of myself.

Look at my blue eyes, aren’t they so pretty?
Read all my new posts, always so witty.
Tell you ’bout the weather, it is so sunny.
Five hundred friends, but no one sitting near me.

Got a new toothbrush, thought that you’d like to know.
Great seats at the game, posting on the go.
I can act, dance, and sing – look at the vids I shared.
Modesty is old-fashioned, now my soul is bared.
Now please excuse me as I take 300 shots of myself.

Look at my blue eyes, aren’t they so pretty?
Read all my new posts, always so witty.
Tell you ’bout the weather, it is so sunny.
Five hundred friends, but no one sitting near me.

And will you hide me today?
And will you hide me tomorrow?

Look at my blue eyes, aren’t they so pretty?
Read all my new posts, always so witty.
Tell you ’bout the weather, it is so sunny.
Five hundred friends, but no one sitting near me.

Week 18 signal decoded: Cosplaying Misfit

This week’s signal has been deciphered and has been found to be a song titled “Cosplaying Misfit”. What the aliens are doing cosplaying is anyone’s guess. For those who may not know what the cosplay phenomenon is, here is the Wikipedia entry.

This song is about two individuals, one who dresses up as “Fleet Commander Skyne” and his girlfriend who dresses up as some sort of superhero, presumably from a popular alien comic book. Our research indicates no fictional characters who fit their descriptions on our planet. So we can assume the aliens read and enjoy fiction, much as we humans do. Let’s hope their superheros are indeed fictional.

The song and its lyrics:

———-

Lace up my boots, put on my wig.
Button up my jacket, custom made to fit.
Got my laser gun, sparkling in the sun.
Two months’ paychecks, now my costume is done.
I am now Fleet Commander Skyne.
I hope my girlfriend doesn’t mind.

She was wearing my favorite superhero’s outfit.
Never knew that she was ever really into it.
Perfect fit boots, knee high, drive me wild.
Purple hair flowing neatly down her left side.
Can she fly? Could this all be a dream?
Never gonna let her go.
She is my cosplaying misfit.

Straight from the ink of issue number one,
The convention floor has never been more fun.
Got my camera phone, send my pictures home.
Now I know that we will never be alone.
We should cosplay all of the time.

Dress me up.
Dress you up.
Dress us up.

Week 17 signal decoded: Heavy Plastic (The Rock Band Anthem)

We’re back! After a brief break and the release of our first album (Inbound Probe), we’re now back decoding new songs every week. Expect at least ten new tunes, one every week, before the next break.

This week’s song is apparently inspired by music-based video games such as Rock Band and Guitar Hero. It’s called “Heavy Plastic (The Rock Band Anthem)” and looks at various aspects of the rock music video game phenomenon. It’s quite surprising to learn that the aliens are up there somewhere jamming on their own fake instruments.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The lyrics:

———-

It’s time to unwind, time to relax.
Gonna hang out with some friends and lay down some tracks.
Got the big screen, got the subwoofer on.
Notify the neighbors, gonna unplug the phone.
Cinch ‘em up and grab the sticks, we’re ready to rock.
Time has no meaning, gonna melt the clock.
The set has started, we know what to do.
Gotta be perfect the whole way through.

You’re never gonna have to save us.
Yeah, we’re always at the top.
A million fans are gonna join us,
Cuz we’re rockin’ and can’t stop.

Struts, windmills, duck walks, we got classic style.
The music we’re playing is not just a file.
Our pedigree comes straight from the best.
We give it everything because the wicked won’t rest.
Hitting all the solos, the points will add up.
Everyone is rockin’, feel the bass in your gut.
The crowd is cheering, they love this next part.
Who says that games and rock could never be art?

You’re never gonna have to save us.
Yeah, we’re always at the top.
A million fans are gonna join us,
Cuz we’re rockin’ and can’t stop.

In our rock band our axes are steel.
Heavy plastic rock and roll is real.

You’re never gonna have to save us.
Yeah, we’re always at the top.
A million fans are gonna join us,
Cuz we’re rockin’ and can’t stop.

The endless set list is good for a start.
Every song we’ll switch and play a new part.
We have more cash than we’ll ever spend.
The sun is rising but we’ll never end.

In our rock band our axes are steel.
Heavy plastic rock and roll is real.

Perhaps the aliens have been looking forward to The Beatles Rock Band as much as we earthlings have been. Until next week…

Week 16 signal decoded: Stubbornness

The signal for this week has been deciphered and the resulting song is entitled, “Stubborness”. It has a different feel than most of the other songs so far… a new more sincere tone from the aliens.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

And the lyrics:

———-

Such a nice day outside, I wish I could enjoy.
But there’s a weight on my mind, I feel like a little boy.
I can’t believe the things I said, they are not true.
And worst of all I know what I said really did hurt you.

Why did I have to open my mouth again?
I wish I could say that I’m not him.

My mom and dad told me, “Son, think before you talk.”
So I’m not used to taking back things that might shock.
When I’m wrong it’s just so hard to swallow my pride.
I’d apologize but I don’t know how – I’ve tried.

Why can’t I just keep my mouth shut?
Now I know how deep words can cut.

Stubbornness, I just can’t take it back.
Stubbornness, I wish I could relax.

Why can’t I just keep my mouth shut?
Now I know how deep words can cut.

Stubbornness, I just can’t take it back.
Stubbornness, I wish I could relax.

How many times in my life have I been oh so wrong?
Nobody’s perfect, you can screw up and still be strong.
Got to learn how to bite my tongue when I’m not sure.
Hope it’s not too late to be the only one for her.

Why did I have to open my mouth again?
I wish I could say that I’m not him.

Stubbornness, I just can’t take it back.
Stubbornness, I wish I could relax.

Stubbornness, I just can’t take it back.
Stubbornness, I wish I could relax.

More next week!

Week 15 signal decoded: Don’t Do Drugs

This week’s signal seems to indicate that the aliens are aware of the human fascination with drugs of all sorts, legal and illegal, and the hypocrisy which surrounds their use. We at the Institute wonder if they still make use of pharmaceuticals on their planet or if they have evolved beyond that and see us as still very primitive.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

And the lyrics:

———-

“…and earlier today, federal agents raided a house suspected of being at the center of a local marijuana growing operation. The bust yielded five marijuana plants and also resulted in the arrest of the home’s owner, a 76 year-old grandmother who had to be rushed to the hospital after agents mistook her cup of tea for a handgun and shot her 24 times.”

Don’t do drugs! Unless it’s…
Ibuprofen, codeine, morphine, oxycodone, cephalexin, sertraline, prednisolone
They’ll make ya feel good!
Methadone, diazepam, hydrocodone, lidocaine, sildenafil citrate
Your wife says that you should!
Side effects may include anxiety, sweating, headaches, and a week of blurry vision.
But it’s alright because your pusher wrote your prescription.

Aspirin, minoxidil, dopamine, alprazolam, doxycycline, novocaine
Everything is alright.
Acetaminophen, Vardenafil, Tadalafil, tetracycline, duloxetine
You can have a good night.
Side effects may include suicidal thoughts and a 90% risk of addiction.
But it’s alright because your pusher wrote your prescription.

Have a headache… take this.
Can’t sit still… take this.
Feeling sad… take this.
Hang out with friends… drink this.
Losing hair… take this.
Can’t sleep at night… take this.

Don’t do drugs! Unless it’s…
Whiskey, Vodka, Champagne, Red wine, Brandy, Rum, Tequila, Sherry, White wine, beer, scotch, and gin
Welcome to the club.
Ibuprofen, codeine, morphine, oxycodone, cephalexin, sertraline, prednisolone
They’ll make ya feel good!
Side effects may include liver damage, puking, and a total lack of inhibition.
But it’s alright because your pusher wrote your prescription.

Have a headache… take this.
Can’t sit still… take this.
Feeling sad… take this.
Hang out with friends… drink this.
Losing hair… take this.
Can’t sleep at night… take this.

Look for the next signal translation very soon…

Week 14 signal decoded: I Wanna Be An Alien’s Pet

Uh oh. Is this a seed they’re planting in our minds? Might they want to use us merely as pets? The song for this week has been translated as “I Wanna Be An Alien’s Pet”.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The lyrics:

———-

I wanna be an alien’s pet.
I want two dozen doughnuts for breakfast in bed.
I wanna  get up at 2
And play video games til 10.

I don’t shed, I never make a mess.
I’ll give you good laughs when you see how I dress.
You can watch me play fetch,
Do your taxes, or play kazoo.

I’m ready, beam me up today.
My life on Earth is just a waste.

I’m ready, beam me up today.
My life on Earth is just a waste.
Nobody here gets any sort of kick from anything I do.
Feed me, water me, pet me, neuter me, it’s all up to you.

My collar’s tight but at least it’s not blue.
Don’t need no money, my working days are through.
If you want to find me,
Just look into the sky.

I’m ready, beam me up today.
My life on Earth is just a waste.
Nobody here gets any sort of kick from anything I do.
Feed me, water me, pet me, neuter me, it’s all up to you.

———-

Keep on your toes. Being a pet doesn’t sound too appealing to us here at the ECI. Until next week…

Week 13 signal decoded: Hi Def Vomit

The aliens must be watching our televisual broadcasts. “Hi Def Vomit” seems to be about the sorry state of our TV entertainment. Make sure you have your subwoofers switched on for this one. They pumped up the bass a bit.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The lyrics:

———-

Pollution oozing out our walls,
Blue-green glow infects all our homes,
And it seeps right into our minds,
Imagination’s redefined.

A cure for all our laziness,
Don’t think too much, it just adds stress.
Our friends, our masters all the same,
Reality is just a game.

And now we see so well,
But what are we watching?
Crooked reflection of ourselves,
The world drowns in seas of green.

It flows and spins and never stops.
One-way airways control our thoughts.
Our dark side’s never been this clear,
Looking good, our new boss is here.

And now we see so well,
But what are we watching?
Crooked reflection of ourselves,
The world drowns in seas of green.
